The United Way of Northeast Michigan’s story began on September 14, 1955, when local leaders, motivated by a shared commitment to community well-being, founded what was then known as the United Fund of Alpena. This collaborative effort marked the start of a movement aimed at bringing together resources, volunteers, and visionaries to address the pressing needs of our community.
Through decades of growth, change, and challenges, our movement has evolved. In the late ’60s, we transitioned to the Alpena County United Way, and in 1986, we adopted our current name, reflecting our expanded reach and deepened impact across Northeast Michigan. Each phase of our journey has been driven by our core values of compassion, integrity, and community partnership.
Our history is rich with milestones that reflect our community’s resilience and generosity. From our first campaign, which raised $52,692, to the establishment of groundbreaking programs and services, every achievement has been a step toward a better future for our neighbors. We’ve responded to emergent needs, from natural disasters to economic downturns, with unwavering commitment and innovative approaches.
Central to our movement is the belief that we are stronger together. Partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, non-profits, and volunteers have been instrumental in amplifying our impact.
